Original Plan
After years of maintenance neglect by the previous owner, our apartment building was put up for sale at the end of 2019. As longtime tenants—many of us low-income residents living under rent control—we united to take action. We successfully petitioned the City of Santa Monica to support Community Corporation of Santa Monica (CCSM) in purchasing our building, preventing a developer from taking over and displacing our community. Thanks to CCSM, in January 2020, we secured our homes.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the long-promised and much-needed rehabilitation of our building never took place. As a result, we are once again facing the risk of displacement.
Our building is in a severe state of disrepair, posing serious health and safety risks to residents. For over a decade, we have endured unsafe and unstable living conditions, including:
• Leaking and deteriorating roofs and gutters
• Non-functioning wall heaters
• Mold and termite infestations
• Broken windows
• Outdated, corroded plumbing
• Faulty electrical systems
• Asbestos and lead exposure
Below, you will find photos documenting the hazardous conditions we continue to live in. Immediate action is needed to ensure the safety and stability of our community.
